Complete Guide To Starship: Falcon 9 VS Starship. What's new? What's different?

25 531 Shikime 2,6 mln
Shkencë dhe teknologji

SpaceX is taking everything up a notch with Starship. This thing is the ultimate challenge in aerospace engineering, a FULLY and rapidly reusable super heavy lift launch vehicle, capable of taking 150 metric tonnes to low Earth orbit.
But Starship’s ultimate goal goes way beyond just terrestrial orbital ambitions, Starship is the first vehicle designed to actually take human beings to Mars and back again.
In order to achieve this absolutely bonkers goal, SpaceX has had to employ a litany of new technologies, use new materials, develop the most advanced rocket engines ever made and come up with some wild ideas that have never been tried before… and maybe for good reason.
So today I wanted to go over all of these new technologies and compare it to SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy to help point out what things are new, what things are different and what they’ve learned from the Falcon family that will apply to Starship in order to really understand just how ambitious this project is.
We won’t be just scratching the surface here, in fact we’ll actually be taking you inside the rockets and showing you basically every single part and going over all of them with a fine tooth comb so you can learn as much as possible and have a definitive guide to Starship.

SpaceX makes me dream, like when I was 8 years old (in 1969) and my older brother explained to me everything about Apollo ... Sleepless night to see the first step live, a map of the moon on the table, the model of the LEM at the planned landing point ... Whaouh, what memories! And after, nothing, too expensive, too complicated, the oil crisis, and the Concorde also became too greedy, nothing to make the planes and the stars dream ... And right now, full of excitement watching Starship. Already, the 1st stage of Falcon9 coming back, as if nothing had happened, I can't get enough of it. And there, to see this ship do its belly-flop, like in a dream, but no, this is not a Flash Gordon movie! This is for real! I can't wait for the great joy given for a while by SN10 to be renewed. And there I am thinking of "Tintin" and his "Conquest of the Moon", yes, for real, seeing these big shiny gadgets posing like a charm, re-believing in the conquest of space, strongly! Yes ! (PS: And the Artemis program takes a whole new dimension with Starship too !!!)

Sounds all good and logical, but nevertheless I've many doubts and questions in my mind about the whole "Starship" project. At the moment this rocket has flown a few atmospheric test flights at airplane altitude. It came down from a hovering point at 30.000 feet with nearly zero vertical velocity! But this never will be the point, if it will come back to Earth from a real space mission. Per example for a test flight to circle the Earth a few times the upper stage need to speed up to 8km per second. This will take a lot of fuel, because this whole rocket will be really super heavy! Okay, we going up into LEO at approximately 300km with a speed of 28.000km per hour! Now please tell me from where will become this thing its fuel to reduce the speed and slow it down to a velocity for a Earth atmosphere reentry without using or needing a special heat shield? Or will be the upper stage only used for one way tickets to Mars? I guess not, because in matter of this planet this belly flop isn't needed, because the atmosphere of Mars is much too thin for such a landing we have seen here on Earth. In matter of fact the rocket must dive down on it's back with running engines the whole landing processes, because the rocket will reach Mars with a velocity of more than 11km per seconds! So let me ask this again: from where will come the whole fuel to "push the brake"? Can you explain it?
