Spacex should use flux pinning to stop Starship in bellyflop above an electrically charged pad. The cold belly from sloshed liquid oxygen/methane on ceramic heat shield tiles can create a superconductor quantum locking situation that cushions, slows, and stops the rocket in mid air. Tim ask Elon if they have considered this. Just imagine seeing Starship (BFR) skydiving down to the pad, slowing, stopping, floating, and rotating like the actual BFG! I'm going to copy pasta this everywhere till I hear a response 😁

Hi Tim: We've chatted before, although it's been quite a while (like around the same time Starhopper had its successful flight test...), however, I've been mulling around this "fuel and refueling" issue for Starship for quite a while, and I am hoping to get your thoughts on what I think is the solution... Why not strap 3 or 4 SRBs with "gimbleable" (is that a word?) engine-nozzles to the Starship as well as the Super Heavy, and let them do most, or all of the work getting to orbit. There would only be a small amount of fuel needed by Super Heavy after achieved orbit to return to the surface, so whatever unneeded fuel for re-entry that is left in the Super could be pumped over to the Starship, and walah - instead of four or five flights to orbit to top off the Starship tanks for "Deep Space Ops", you do it with the initial launch... In this way, you can send a whole fleet of Starships almost anywhere you want without weeks and weeks in orbit around the earth, waiting on multiple flights from the surface to refuel! I've been working this in my head for about a month now, and I can't think of any negatives. Would you mind please perusing the idea and filling me in on what I might not be considering? Otherwise, if you can't come up with any negatives either, how about shooting the idea Elon's and his engineers' way, and gather their thoughts on the subject. Additionally, if this idea has already been placed on the table and found not viable; if you wouldn't mind filling me in on the basic "why nots", I would be much obliged. Thanks Tim.

And that is with existing technology that SpaceX has currently so for instance the Falcon heavy tanks has two tanks on either side but instead of two tanks the mother starship has four starships a total of five starships in a configuration or cluster the mother starship will have to be built slightly differently and slightly longer so that she can carry the cluster of four ships starships so we know there is going to be a total of five ships a mother four starship. The mothership will be launched into space first and the four star ships will join the Mother starship and will Be cuplink together like the Falcone heavy with the two boosters but instead of boosters she has four stars ships around with her

  35. Allen Chucky Mann

Just a thought that came to my mind. For starship voyage to Mars, instead of filling up each and every starship with a full tank. Elon can create a mother starship that will or can carry a cluster of four starships . These four starships only need fuel for landing and taking off from the surface of Mars and then the mothership has enough fuel to take her back to Earth.

So, let me get this straight. SpaceX just launched a regular mid-size rocket, launched 143 satellites in one go, used a dog-leg maneuver to do SSO out of Cape Canaveral, recovered the booster (after a fifth flight) which itself flew less than 2 months ago, recovered both fairings too, and deployed all 143 satellites perfectly. Seriously, could there be a more crowning moment for Falcon 9?

This flight profile was really interesting. I'm guessing they put more vertical velocity into the 2nd stage to give it more time to circularise and to ensure it wasn't doing a low flight over the Caribbean, effectively dropping the 1st stage and fairings like bricks into the Caribbean Sea. That would also explain the seemingly early fairing separation, since they were probably already at appropriate altitude and were on-target for their splash-down location. Very cool.

@Alan May I think a grand total of seven countries have the ability to put satellites in to orbit. I am not counting New Zealand because Rocket Lab is actually an American company, owned by a New Zealander, which just happens to launch out of New Zealand. They will begin launch operations out of the United States this year, and may eventually also use the Sutherland Spaceport in Scotland, which I think will be very cool. Anyway, to the extent that any national program, or private company seeks to provide commercial launch service, they have been deeply affected by SpaceX, and even the ones that are not so commercially involved are beginning to look in to developing reusable rockets because of SpaceX's example.

@Odysseus Rex the Russian rocket is still the fastest way to reach the ISS for example for that its awesome its also the most successful/reliable rocket. the Indians also have their own rockets, new Zealand and many other countries.

@Alan May Except, whereas the Russians used to dominate the commercial launch market, now they have been virtually driven out of it. The same applies to former number two Arianespace. Both it and Roscosmos are reduced to being mere national carriers.

$50-60 Mil for 143 satellites and PSLV costs a fraction just $18 - 28 mil no thank you. But should appreciate their engineering.

Should SpaceX try catching a Falcon9 first stage before progressing to Starship booster?

    1. Dave Patchett
      Dave Patchett
      3 muaj më parë

@Leo Sanjaya I think the probability that they would go this way is less than 50% but there are some advantages. 1. They get to solve catching problems on a smaller scale before scaling up - potentially trialling more than one solution. 2. By using well proved and highly accurate F9s they isolate the catching problem. 3. They get to test solutions to the catching problem immediately without having to wait for a superheavy booster to become reliable. 4. SpaceX has a surplus of F9 boosters and can afford to lose some. The biggest point is no.3 - they get to progress without having to wait. For example there are huge benefits for eventual human rated starship design to come from the Dragon capsule knowledge. However if the F9 booster grid fins and support structures within the main body are too flimsy for a catch then yes - I doubt they will go this way. It may be that the superheavy booster will require some very significant internal structural elements beyond just strong grid-fins to be catchable.

Nope, waste of money and time for all the spacex enginering and staff, all focus to the starship and heavy booster development.

Their on-screen timing for 1st stage landing was off...looked like it was lost for bit there until it came in as per usual...as per usual...that's something I never thought I hear myself say about a rocket "landing", but that's how reliable the Falcon9 is getting to be. I can't remember the last time they lost a booster (when not on purpose).

The stage 1 telemetry is simulated and in the middle it was off like you said. It doesn't come from SpaceX like stage 2 which uses real time telemetry. It comes from " Flight Club IO".

It's a ring of ice that falls off the grid fin hinge area as it opens. It happens on almost every flight.

Don't see how it could be a fairing. The delta-v for these components would be thousands of MPH different and they would be 100's of miles apart.
